2023-11-16

Recently, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) together with the Austrian government and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) co-organized the International Vienna Energy and Climate Forum (IVECF 2023) at the Hofburg Palace, which enjoys a history of nearly eight centuries.

The event aims to foster new partnerships to scale up investments and technology transfer for developing countries and contribute to the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The forum attracted 2,000 participants from 145 countries and organized 20 solution talks, 5 high-level plenaries, and 50+ solution sessions. Participants from various countries demonstrated global sustainable and climate-adaptive innovative technologies and transformation solutions and had in-depth discussions on how to strengthen international cooperation, promote green energy, reduce carbon emissions, and improve climate adaptability. The forum provides an important platform for the international community to work together to solve the urgent challenges of global climate change and sustainable development.

Mr. Alexander Van der Bellen, President of the Austrian Federation, and Gerd Müller, Director General of UNIDO, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. Director General Müller pointed out the importance of energy as the basis for all development and progress. As the global population continues to grow, global primary energy demand is expected to increase by 50% to 70% by 2050. In order to combat the climate crisis and protect global public goods, there is an urgent need to establish a new, sustainable and equitable global growth model. Müller called for a new "Green Deal" and more investment, while stressing the responsibility of industrialized countries to deliver on their commitments to tackle the climate crisis.
